Nature’s Sunshine Products: Quality Standards and Certifications

We believe that good health and well-being have the power to transform lives. In today's world of over-hyped ingredients, questionable quality standards, and fly-by-night brands, Nature's Sunshine stands as the proven choice for people seeking reliable sources for optimal health.

Founded in 1972 by the Hughes family, Nature's Sunshine has grown into a global organization. The story began with a single innovative idea: putting herbs into capsules to make dietary supplements easy to consume. Over the past forty-five years, we have grown into a global force for good health across 26 markets worldwide.

Scientific Approach and the Hughes Research Center

Innovation is a core principle of Nature's Sunshine Products. We proudly continue our legacy of innovation with the opening of the Hughes Center for Research and Innovation in February 2015.

Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and combining the expertise of scientists, researchers, and medical professionals, the Hughes Research and Innovation Center creates a unique environment for scientific discovery and advancement. Our Research and Development department—a team of seven scientists, including five PhDs and two MDs—works on creating new products and testing new ingredients and formulas. To evaluate the effectiveness of new formulas developed with cutting-edge equipment, the NSP team conducts its own product trials involving volunteers.

Uncompromising Quality Control (600+ Tests)

The company confidently guarantees the purity and potency of every product that bears the Nature's Sunshine Products name. To start with, Nature's Sunshine Products Inc. operates not just one, but SIX laboratories. Every year, NSP spends approximately $2,500,000 solely on perfecting its quality control system, which manages a closed-loop process from raw materials to the finished product.

NSP specialists begin quality control at the stage of sourcing the right raw materials. Therefore, all plants are harvested strictly during their peak potency period. The company manufactures only high-quality products according to stringent standards. For this reason, raw materials of inadequate quality have been returned to suppliers (for example, Perfect Eyes in 2000, Paw Paw in 2018, and Morinda in 2019).

Company employees utilize over 600 tests and procedures to ensure that NSP product quality is the highest in the industry.

Key Laboratory Testing Methods:

  • Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR): Essentially, FTIR is an authenticity detector. It is used to determine the purity and identity of a sample.
  • High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC): HPLC is sophisticated, highly sensitive, and automated equipment used to identify and analyze the ingredients of complex solutions.
  • Microbiological Testing: A bactometer is a specialized instrument used to determine product purity, confirming quality and the absence of contamination. Both raw materials and finished products undergo such microbiological examination.
  • Gas Chromatography (GC): Gas chromatography allows for the separation of complex mixtures into individual components and the determination of their quantitative content.
  • Dissolution Testing: The latest equipment installed in Nature's Sunshine laboratories can simulate the digestion process. The test replicates intestinal motility, temperature conditions, and other physiological features of digestion.

Production Facilities and Stages

The main manufacturing complex is located in Utah, USA. Production facilities span over 9,000 square meters.

  • Raw Material Storage: Production begins with the receipt of raw materials—7,500 specialized containers store the initial product. For proper and most efficient storage, the modern "freeze-drying" method is utilized.
  • Encapsulation and Tableting: More than half of all Nature's Sunshine products are capsules. Approximately 6,000,000 capsules come off the assembly line daily. Rotary machines compress tablets at a rate of 75,000 tablets per hour.
  • Finished Product Control: At NSP, it is a rule—every single package of finished product undergoes inspection. No batch reaches the consumer without a stamp confirming it has passed all tests and checks.

International Certificates: Confirmation of Reliability

NSP products meet all quality standards, including FDA and TGA requirements. The list of certifications held by NSP products includes: ISO, GMP, NSF, FDA, TGA, WADA, USDA, KO.

  • GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice): A document confirming that our production sites and all products manufactured there comply with Good Manufacturing Practice standards. GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice)
  • NSF International: As an independent accredited organization, it inspects, audits, and certifies products and systems. Its independent status ensures that products and equipment are tested and evaluated with complete impartiality.
NSF International
  • FDA (Food and Drug Administration): American manufacturers of dietary supplements must comply with FDA requirements. Nature's Sunshine has passed all audits without any observations or citations, "approval number": 14491296482.
  • WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency): The WADA certificate confirms the absence of prohibited components in the products and permits their use by athletes.
WADA
  • TGA: The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration. This product certificate was obtained because the products are available for purchase in Australia.
TGA 1 TGA 2
  • USDA: Issues Certificates of Free Sale to Nature's Sunshine. These certificates are issued for each individual product and are necessary for product registration in other markets.
USDA
  • ISO 9001:2015: This standard (International Organization for Standardization) describes the quality management system and forms a unified approach to understanding how an organization's management system should be structured to ensure maximum quality in production, customer interaction, and internal employee relations.
